Go Green With LED Retrofit (1)The lighting industry witnessed a worldwide trend of replacing incandescent lights with energy saving compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). This wide acceptability of compact fluorescent lights was mainly due to their lower cost, lower, energy consumption and better efficiency as compared to the conventional incandescent lights. These lights have a much longer lifespan and their energy consumption is as low as 80% compared to the older technologies. So, CFLs came and took over the lighting market, pushing incandescent lights to the background.
But gradually, the use of CFLs brought the attention of many environmental and public health experts towards the consequences of this market transition. Ever since the introduction of CFLs in the market, absolutely no attention was paid to the environmental and public health impacts related to their use. Today, the research has proven that the compact fluorescent lights are a hazard for environment and public health due to the presence of 5 milligram gaseous mercury inside each bulb. Also, due to their energy consumption, the Greenhouse gas emissions associated with CFLs are considerably high for just one light bulb. Another issue is the generation of heat by these bulbs which increases the air conditioning requirements inside the buildings. According to careful calculations, one compact fluorescent light bulb generates heat equal to 30 BTU per hour. Although this is much lower as compared to 85 BTU per hour generated by incandescent lights, but for one bulb, even 30 BTU is considerable.
But the question is that if both incandescent and compact fluorescent lights are environmentally unacceptable, what should we do? Well, this is where the experts recommend LED retrofits! Research has proven that at present, LED lights are the greenest lighting technology. These lights generate negligible amount of heat and hence there is essentially no increase in the air conditioning requirements. Also, LED lights do not contain any hazardous chemical like mercury. Their electricity consumption is miraculously low as compared to both CFL and incandescent lights which reduces the Greenhouse gas emissions of one LED light bulb to only 20 kilogram carbon dioxide per year while the annual emissions associated with one CFL and incandescent bulb are 44 kilogram and 175 kilogram carbon dioxide respectively. This means that replacing one CFL with LED light can reduce 24 kilogram of carbon dioxide per year. Consider where the total emission savings will reach if you go for complete LED retrofit!
