Lighting Needs Of The Seniors:

So, what makes the difference in the lighting needs of seniors and youngsters? Here are afew lighting issues which the elderly people face due to old age:

  • First of all, we all know that as we grow old, our eyes need more light to see clearly. Therefore, the re-modeling plan of the residential lighting for seniors should incorporate the increase in lighting levels in important activity areas such as study rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Cataracts is a common eye disorder among the elders. It makes it very hard for them to clearly recognize colours and even properly visualize the objects in places having uneven lighting. Replacing dark wall paint colours with lighter tones and direct down lights with indirect lights usually provides a relief in such situations where uneven lighting poses problems. Light-coloured walls and ceilings tend to even out the lighting. Indirect lights also soften the shadows and hence make the lighting more evenly distributed.
  • Another very common issue is that as the people get old, the eye lenses develop a yellowish shade and become more opaque. This decrease in transparency of lenses makes the light, scatter inside the eyes thus increasing glare effect. However, the glare effect can be minimized by avoiding the use of uncovered dazzling lights and instead using shaded lighting fixtures wherever possible.
  • Commonly, seniors are considered at high risk of tripping or falling. Therefore installing occupancy sensors in bathrooms and hallways should not be missed while re-modeling the residential lighting for the ease of seniors.

Lighting design re-modeling for the elders is very important since it can help prevent possible accidents or inconvenience to them. If you have seniors at home, you should keep the lighting remodeling for them as your top priority
